Protective Sundarban

>> Monday, December 27, 2010

Global warming is another factor in causing natural calamities. Natural calamities cause maximum damage in Bangladesh. This is because of the low flat land, high density of population, poorly built houses and also lack of drastic plans.
Natural disaster causes heavy losses in our country. Many people are killed and many other become homeless. The havoc also includes death of cattle, wide spread destruction of houses, uprooting of trees, damage of crops, roads and structures. Shortly after the disaster, many diseases break out and communication system is suspended causing untold sufferings to people.
Being a natural phenomenon, it is not possible to prevent natural disasters. We can take some protective measures to listen the sufferings of the victims. Both long and short term plans can be taken. Government must take projects for a forestation. In addition, warning and preparatory measures have to be improved. Finally we should raise awareness in people to protect our lives and properties from the tremendous attack of natural calamities.

Green House Effect

Scientists have recently reported that the polar ice caps melting. This is due to a rise in atmospheric temperatures known as the ‘Green house effect’. According to Melvin Calvin, who won a Noble Prize for earlier research, the carbon dioxide is primarily responsible for temperature rise in atmosphere. The carbon dioxide is given off when coal and oil are burnt. This gas is accumulating in the atmosphere and causing temperature to rise. As a result, the ice covering the north and south poles is melting and may eventually lead to rise in sea levels which could flood many areas of the world. Even if we take measures to stop the melting, it may take years to control the rise in sea levels. The ‘Green house effect’ is just one of many fundamental changes which are taking place in the environment. Tropical rain forests, which took fifty million years to grow, are being reduced at the rate of fourteen acres per minute. The total area of world’s deserts is increasing every year. Many species of animals and plants are endangered with the threat of extinction. In presenting the results of “Global 2000” Edmu Muskie says that world population growth, the degradation of the earth’s natural resources base and the spread of the environmental pollution collectively threaten the existence of the inhabitants of the world. If the people of the world do not act quickly and decisively to protect the environment, this world will soon become uninhabitable.

Importance of tree

Trees are useful to man in three very important ways. They provide him with wood and fruits. They give him shade and help to prevent drought and floods. Unfortunately, in many parts of the world man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important. In his eagerness to draw quick profit from the trees, he has cut them down in large numbers. Only to find that with them he has lost the best friend he had. Two thousand years ago a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships with which to gain itself  an empire. It gained the empire but without its trees its soil became hard and poor. The country found itself faced by floods and starvation. Even where a government realizes the importance of a plentiful supply of trees, it is difficult to persuade the villagers to see this. The villagers want wood to cook their food with and they can earn money by making charcoal or by selling wood to the townsman. The villagers are usually too lazy or too careless to plant and look after new trees. So, unless the government has a good system of control or can educate the people the forest will slowly disappear. The roots of the trees break the soil and allow the rain water to sink in. They also bind the soil and thus prevent its being washed away. Where there are no trees the rain falls on hard ground and flows away in the surface causing floods and carrying away with it the rich top soil in which crops grow well.
